HB 2230

This bill creates a task force to study the utility, efficacy, and feasibility of incorporating fine arts into the Foundation Curriculum.

AUSTIN, TEXAS, April 23, 2021 - House Bill 2230 that creates a task force to study the possibility of moving fine arts to the foundation curriculum was unanimously voted out of the House Public Education Committee on April 23rd and recommended for passage by the full House. Making the motion was Representative Keith Bell, author of HB 434 that would have allowed CTE to meet the one-credit fine arts graduation requirement in current law. While that bill did not move from committee, we are indebted to Representative Bell for his support of fine arts. While a funding source has not been identified for the $231,140 fiscal note placed on it by the Legislative Budget Board, it is encouraging that this major step has been taken to keep the bill moving through the process.

AUSTIN, TEXAS, March 30, 2021 - Also scheduled for a hearing on March 30 was HB 2230. This bill creates a task force to study the utility, efficacy, and feasibility of incorporating fine arts into the Foundation Curriculum. TAEC members provided both written and verbal testimony. Representative John Bucy, who authored the bill, is confident the support is present in the committee to move it forward in the process. We may be reaching out to you as a member of TAEC to encourage your representative to support the bill. The passage of this bill could be a giant step toward allowing us to have this discussion and elevate the importance of fine arts as a foundational part of an education, of life skill development, and workforce training no matter the career path.
